JAL, which has bases throughout Japan, has been continuously implementing regional revitalization initiatives (currently the “JAL Furusato Project”), and in August 2020 launched the “JAL Furusato Ambassadors,” cabin crew members selected through an in-house recruitment process who move to the area to promote initiatives in their respective regions. In December of the same year, JAL appointed “JAL Hometown Cheering Troops” who are involved in regional revitalization while serving on board. The aim is to develop products and solve regional issues for hometowns and other regions with which they have connections, utilizing the knowledge they have accumulated as flight attendants.
We spoke with Ruriko Yoshifuku, a JAL Furusato Ambassador who is involved in promoting the charms of the Amami Islands.
–Tell us about the Yolon Marathon.
The Yoron Marathon is a popular marathon event held on Yoron Island, surrounded by clear waters. Every year, many runners gather from all over Japan to enjoy the natural beauty of the island.
When I arrived at the airport, the people of Yoronjima welcomed me with a “Welcome back! and you can feel the warm atmosphere that only a marathon with many repeaters can provide.
–How are you involved in this effort?
As a JAL hometown ambassador and a member of the sponsoring company, I participated in supporting the event and had the opportunity to convey the charm of the island from the local community.
Many JAL Group employees participated in the event, and they found the course, with its many ups and downs, to be “tough ……! But after finishing the race, they said with smiles, “It’s not easy to find a race with such warmth and a sense of togetherness! I was very impressed by the smiling faces of the participants. Through the cheering along the roadsides and interaction with the runners, I strongly felt that this is an event that the entire island is excited about.
–What is the appeal of the Yolon Marathon?
The course offers a number of scenic spots that make you want to stop and take in the view. Runners will enjoy the ever-changing scenery, from the exhilarating path along the shimmering blue ocean to the nostalgic scenery surrounded by nature.
Another attraction is the warm contact with the islanders. At the aid stations where island fruits and local dishes were served, we felt a heartwarming welcome as everyone from children to the elderly cheered us on.
In front of the finish line, junior high school students were cheering for the runners. I felt that the sight of the entire island coming together to welcome the runners was one of the major attractions of the Yolon Marathon.
The “sense of unity among participants” that is unique to the Yolon Marathon is also an important part of the event. At the post-run festival, runners and islanders alike joined together to sing and dance, creating a great atmosphere. I realized that this event is more than just running; it is an event where one can feel a strong sense of connection with others.
–What is your message to travelers?
Yoron is a beautiful island where runners and walkers alike can unwind simply by admiring the scenery. In the Yoron Marathon, you will experience the charm of the island with all your senses through the beautiful nature and interaction with the islanders, and there will be many moments that will make you smile.
When you actually visit, you will be moved by the scenery and the warmth of the people, and you will surely want to come back again. We hope you will visit the island and actually feel the beautiful scenery and the warmth of the people.
