Emergency relief supplies provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have been delivered to the Republic of Mozambique in response to the country’s torrential rains.

The emergency relief supplies for Mozambique arrived in the capital city of Maputo on January 27 and 28, and a handover ceremony was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation at 16:00 (local time) on January 28, attended by the Mozambican Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Maria Manuela dos Santos and the Japanese Ambassador to Mozambique Keiji Hamada and Kazuya Otsuka, Director of the JICA Mozambique Office. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Maria Manuela dos Santos from the Mozambican side and the Japanese Ambassador to Mozambique Keiji Hamada and JICA Mozambique Office Director Kazuya Otsuka.

At the handover ceremony, Minister Santos expressed his deep appreciation for the prompt assistance provided by Japan, a historical and strategic partner. He also expressed his intention to deliver the goods promptly to the devastated areas in Gaza and Maputo provinces. In response, Ambassador Hamada noted that the emergency assistance was swiftly implemented based on the solid relationship of trust between Japan and Mozambique to help restore the living conditions and ensure the safety of the affected people, and that the two countries would continue to work to ensure effective assistance and strengthen the reconstruction capacity of local communities.

Director Otsuka expressed his heartfelt solidarity with all those affected by the disaster and his determination to “walk with Mozambique in this difficult time.” He also expressed his intention to further strengthen support for disaster prevention and mitigation assistance in Mozambique.

The relief supplies provided this time will be delivered to the victims through the Mozambican government.
