On January 29, KDDI and Okinawa Cellular added connection areas such as connecting waters (24 nautical miles from the coastline) to the domestic connection area of “au Starlink Direct,” which had previously covered Japanese land and territorial waters (12 nautical miles from the coastline).
This will approximately double the connection area and greatly expand it, especially on the Sea of Japan side and in the waters around the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands. In addition to being a means of communication for fishermen in fishing grounds outside Japan’s territorial waters around Japan, it can also be used as a means of communication at sea for sightseeing ferries and other vessels.
au Starlink Direct is a service that allows smartphones to connect directly to Starlink satellites, enabling communication in out-of-sync areas as long as the sky is visible.
