On December 8, Sanrio and Sanrio Entertainment announced a basic plan to develop the outdoor theme park “Sanrio Character Park Harmonyland” (5933 Fujiwara, Hiji-machi, Hayami-gun, Oita Prefecture) into a resort. A location announcement ceremony was held at the Oita Prefectural Government Office together with Oita Prefecture and Hijiemachi.

As the first resort by the Sanrio Group, Harmonyland will be renewed as a “park in the sky” utilizing the magnificent topography of Harmonyland, aiming to be “the most friendly place in the world” that everyone can enjoy regardless of age, gender, physical characteristics, etc. The park is scheduled to be renovated into a “park in the sky” utilizing the magnificent topography of Harmonyland.

The project is considering various elements, including the image of a “sky opening up to the sky,” a large roof for year-round comfort without worrying about rain or heat, ropeways and electric mobility systems to enhance ease of transportation, and new facilities and attractions to be renovated. The company is considering a variety of elements.

A hotel overlooking the park, mountains, and Beppu Bay is being considered for construction in the adjacent area. By creating a new base of operations in an area where it has been difficult to stay for long periods of time, the resort will provide an environment where visitors can relax and enjoy the resort to their heart’s content.

Harmonyland, established in 1991, will celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2026, and in December 2024, signed a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Oita Prefecture, including the “future development of an entertainment resort,” and has been working on various tourism promotion and regional revitalization measures, such as the nickname “Oita Hello Kitty Airport” and the Harmony Liner (a direct connection between Oita Airport, Kitsuki Station and Harmonyland). The company has been working on various tourism promotion and regional revitalization measures, including the nickname “Oita Hello Kitty Airport” and the Harmony Liner (a wrapping bus that directly connects Oita Airport, Kitsuki Station and Harmony Land).

The plan calls for the establishment of a community “Harmonyland Future Co-Creation Office (tentative name)” in which anyone can participate, both domestic and international, and work together with participants to develop the resort’s facilities, decorative design, goods, menu, transportation, and other aspects of the resort.
