HIS has released a summary of travel trends based on international travel bookings for the year-end and New Year holidays (departures between December 26 and January 4, 2026). The survey was conducted on November 7 and covered HIS tours, dynamic packages, and airline tickets (excluding accommodation only).
Year-end and New Year trends
The number of international travel bookings was 99.1% of the previous year’s total. As in previous years, Asia continued to be the top travel destination, with East Asia, particularly popular among short-haul travelers. On the other hand, “Europe” and “Middle East,” both of which are high-priced long-haul destinations, increased from the previous year, suggesting that the nine-day weekend, the longest in a row, had an impact on the choice of destinations.
The average unit price rose to ¥248,000, 105.6% of the previous year’s level. In addition to an increase in the number of bookings in the European and Middle Eastern regions, this increase is thought to have been influenced by the weak yen and higher prices in travel destinations. In terms of composition by customer group, the proportion of family travelers is high, which is typical of the high season.
December departures were the most popular departure date, with 50.7% of all respondents departing between December 26 and 28. The peak departure date for the year-end and New Year holidays is December 27, and the peak return date is January 3.
