JR West Japan’s new “Kizashi” train in the Yamaguchi area of the Sanyo Line. Black-based design, 2- or 3-car formation

Posted on November 16, 2025 by News Admin

JR West will introduce new rolling stock in the Yamaguchi area of the Sanyo Main Line in 2026 or later.

The cars will be based on the Series 227 trains in the Okayama area, and a total of 24 cars will be deployed, including three 2-car trains and six 3-car trains. Inside the cars are convertible cross-seat layouts with wider space near the doorways, barrier-free restrooms, and wheelchair spaces. Safety will be improved with fall prevention covers and door pinch detection devices.

The nickname is “Kizashi,” named after the ancient Japanese word “Yamaguchi,” which means the beginning of things or a sign. The design, based on a black base with a gold band, is based on the theme of “sunlight of the Meiji Restoration,” and also expresses the image of “before dawn,” the scenery along the line, and the dignified elegance of the SL.
