On Thursday, October 30, a corporate exchange event titled “Ukraine Reconstruction Business Entry Strategy Seminar & Exchange Party” was held at JICA’s Kojimachi Headquarters.
Background and Objectives
In Ukraine, where the aggression by Russia has been protracted, there is a growing demand for reconstruction from extensive infrastructure and industrial damage. In addition to public support, the active participation of private capital and its technology and expertise from the international community is essential to realize this massive reconstruction. As President Zelensky emphasizes, “countries that contribute to Ukraine from a wartime perspective” will play a central role in the country’s reconstruction. Based on this recognition, we have organized this event to provide a forum for companies that have already traveled to Ukraine and conducted needs assessments under the “JICA Ukraine Business Support Program” to share their knowledge and challenges with Japanese companies interested in doing business in Ukraine, and to support investment and expansion by Japanese companies for Ukraine’s reconstruction. This event was held with the aim of supporting investment and expansion by Japanese companies for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
Contents
The event was attended by about 120 people (about 50 face-to-face and 70 online) from companies interested in Ukraine’s reconstruction projects. Internet Initiative Japan Inc., Metal Products Corporation, and Kakuichi Corporation), followed by a networking session among the participating companies.
After opening remarks by JICA, JETRO gave a brief overview of its past support schemes for Ukraine, as well as its future plans for promoting private-sector cooperation in the tech sector. In the JETRO session, JETRO spoke about the opportunities and challenges of doing business in Ukraine and its support programs for Japanese companies.
The session was followed by sessions by four companies selected for JICA’s Ukraine Business Support Program. Aikame Corporation, which provides road repair materials in Ukraine, talked about its business development in Ukraine; Internet Initiative Japan Inc. talked about its liaison with Ukraine’s public sector in the course of providing data centers; Metal Products Corporation talked about its local partner in Ukraine to utilize its steel frame processing technology; and Kakuichi Co. The four companies’ passion for Ukraine’s reconstruction was evident in their presentations.
The lively atmosphere at the social event after the seminar provided a good networking opportunity for the companies. As the war drags on, the private sector is essential to Ukraine’s reconstruction. JICA will continue to actively support Ukraine by engaging with the private sector.
The “Ukraine Reconstruction Support and Co-Creation Platform” provides a forum for sharing information, know-how, and experience through seminars and other activities to promote support by Japanese industry, government, and academia for Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction, and to provide opportunities for co-creation and collaboration. We welcome companies interested in Ukraine to register.
