JR East and JR West will finally open the Hokuriku Shinkansen line between Kanazawa and Tsuruga on March 16.

The extended Kanazawa-Tsuruga section extends approximately 125 km, straddles two prefectures, Ishikawa and Fukui, and stops at a total of seven stations (Kanazawa, Komatsu, Kaga Onsen, Ashihara Onsen, Fukui, Echizen Takefu, Tsuruga).

The trains will consist of 12-car Series E7/W7 trains. The Hokuriku Shinkansen “Kagayaki” (express) and “Hakutaka” (local trains) will operate 14 round trips per day directly from the Tokyo area to Tsuruga.

From Osaka, Nagoya, and Maibara, the limited express “Thunderbird” and “Shirasagi” and the Hokuriku Shinkansen “Tsurugi” (express and local trains) connect at Tsuruga Station, where a new station building has been added. This enables passengers to reach the Hokuriku area smoothly from either the east or west.

The travel times (for the fastest trains) for the main segments are as follows
