The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the government of Zimbabwe on March 8 in Harare for a grant of up to 2.389 billion yen for the “Second North-South Corridor Northern Section Road Rehabilitation Project.
Of the North-South Corridor (see note), an international trunk road in Southern Africa, the section that passes through the mountainous northern region of Zimbabwe has not been maintained or repaired due to the high degree of difficulty in design and construction, resulting in frequent traffic accidents. Not only from a safety standpoint, but it is also a major obstacle to smooth logistics, as the travel speed of large trucks is limited to 15 km/h. Under the grant aid project “North-South Corridor Northern Section Road Rehabilitation Project” (hereinafter referred to as the first phase) that started in 2018, the mountain section of 6.5 km from the border in the said section is to be rehabilitated and widened, Japan’s advanced technologies in road design and safety management were highly evaluated.
(Note) An international highway that boasts the largest distribution scale in the region, running from the South African port of Durban through Zimbabwe and Botswana to Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
