Limited sale of 20 “Telephone Card Vending Machines” installed in Tokaido Shinkansen trains. Includes a replica of a nostalgic telephone card.

Posted on February 13, 2024 by News Admin

JR Tokai Retailing Plus will start selling telephone card vending machines, which were once installed in Shinkansen trains, at the JR-PLUS online store on February 19, starting at 10:00.

The price is 29,800 yen per unit and limited to 20 units. In addition to the main unit, a paper replica of eight different phone cards and a certificate identifying the actual N700 Series car (train configuration and car number) in which the card was installed are also included.

The train public telephone service ended on June 30, 2021 due to the spread of cell phones. The Tokaido Shinkansen began installing public telephones in its trains in 1965, the year after its opening, and after the era shifted to telephone card vending machines, telephone cards with Shinkansen designs were also sold on the train decks and elsewhere.

The “green telecard vending machines” to be sold this time were installed in JR Tokai’s Series 0, 100, 300, 700, and N700 trains, and have been replaced by the latest trains as the generation changes. (W x D x H).

The front has a “window” that displays the telephone cards being sold, and replicas of telephone cards can be inserted to enjoy recreating the appearance of telephone card vending machines from various eras. A key used to open and close the machine is also included (replaced by another part, so it is different from the original).
