Check in your suitcase at the station and pick it up at the airport you fly to. I’ve seen “Off-Airport Check-in” started at Meitetsu Nagoya & Centrair.

On February 2, the “Off-Airport Check-in Promotion Project,” including Central Japan International Airport, released an outline of the demonstration experiment to be conducted at Meitetsu Nagoya Station, Central Japan International Airport Station, and New Chitose Airport.

In this project, air passengers’ baggage is checked in at the station area, transported by rail to the airport using transport carts, and then loaded onto the plane that the owner intends to board and delivered to the destination airport.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s “Co-Creation Model Demonstration Project” is being utilized by ANA, JAL, Hokkaido Airport, Nagoya Railroad, Airporter, AGP, and the Next Generation Airport Technology Research Association, in addition to the company.

The demonstration test covers ANA flight NH715 and JAL flight JL3117 (both from Centrair to New Chitose at 16:55), ANA flight NH712 (from New Chitose to Centrair at 17:00), and ANA flight NH714 and JAL flight JL3118 (both from New Chitose to Centrair at 19:20). (both departing at 7:20 p.m. from Shin-Chitose to Centrair).

Luggage is accepted at Meitetsu Shoten on the 1st floor of the Men’s Building of the Meitetsu Department Store Main Store (10:00 – 12:00) on the Nagoya side and at the East Concourse North Exit of JR Hokkaido Sapporo Station (9:00 – 12:00) on the Sapporo side, free of charge.

On the Nagoya side, for example, luggage checked in at Meitetsu Shoten by passengers on the relevant flight is loaded onto a special train from Meitetsu Nagoya Station and transported to Central Japan International Airport Station. The baggage is loaded onto the plane that the passenger is scheduled to board and is picked up at New Chitose Airport. The luggage is discharged from the airport’s baggage claim (baggage claim area) in the same way as regular checked baggage.

By eliminating the need to carry luggage between the station and the airport, passengers will be able to go sightseeing and shopping in the area without any luggage after checking out of their hotels, and save time and effort in checking luggage at the airport. In addition, if this initiative is promoted, less luggage will be carried onto buses and train cars, which will help reduce congestion on board.

The OAC app shares information with the airlines, so that the status of baggage that has arrived at the airport but the passenger has not, for example, can be monitored. The OAC app shares information with the airlines. From the user’s point of view, even if the baggage is checked in through a different procedure than usual (at the airport), the OAC app allows the user to know the current location of the baggage so that he/she can go sightseeing without worrying about the baggage.

Although it was not ready in time for this demonstration experiment, the OAC app will provide information on transportation and sightseeing in the area in the future, and the ideal form would be for functions including luggage status to eventually be integrated into the airline’s app.
