Grant Aid Agreement Signed for Djibouti: Improvement of Main Road Connecting East and West of Djibouti City to Enhance Urban Transportation Functions and Facilitate Regional Logistics | News & Media

Posted on January 24, 2024 by News Admin

On January 22, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the Government of the Republic of Djibouti for a grant of up to 5,944 million yen for the “Palmale Road Bridge Construction Project” in Djibouti City. Djibouti City is divided by the Amboli River, which flows from north to south, into the West Bank residential area (Barbara District, with a population of approximately 400,000), where approximately 70% of the city’s population lives, and the East Bank center (central Djibouti City, with a population of approximately 170,000), where public facilities such as schools and hospitals are located. There are only two main traffic routes connecting the east and west sides of the city: Palmale Road and the Italian Bridge. The Italian Bridge has been damaged and is closed to large vehicles, so large vehicles must use Palmale Road. Signing ceremony

In recent years, the Amboli River in Djibouti rises about one to three times a year due to cyclones and heavy rains caused by global warming, and each time the Palmale road is flooded for one to five days, making it impossible to cross the river and significantly affecting the national economy and daily lives of the people of Djibouti, mainly the logistics service industry.

Therefore, this project will construct a new bridge on Palmale Road and improve the road, etc. to expand traffic capacity and ensure stable transportation in the event of flooding, thereby contributing to strengthening urban transportation functions and facilitating logistics in the “Horn of Africa” (see note) region. Through this project, we will contribute to SDG Goal 9 (Create a foundation for industry and technological innovation) and Goal 11 (Create a livable city).

(The Port of Djibouti, located in Djibouti City, serves as a key point of distribution from the region to Asia and Europe.

The details of the project are as follows
