Rakuten Travel ranks popular hot spring resorts for 2023. Atami Onsen ranked No. 1 for 10 consecutive years, with a string of restaurants and lodging facilities opening in the Kiunkaku-dori shopping street and other areas.

On January 18, Rakuten Travel released its “2023 Annual Ranking of Popular Hot Spring Destinations.

The number of overnight stays (=number of guests x number of nights) for each hot spring resort in Japan during the one-year period from January 1 to December 31, 2023 was tabulated, and “Atami Onsen” in Shizuoka Prefecture ranked first for the 10th consecutive year. Beppu Onsen” in Oita Prefecture came in second place for the 10th consecutive year, and “Nasu Onsen” in Tochigi Prefecture came in third place for the second consecutive year.
