On January 17, JNTO (Japan National Tourism Organization) announced the number of foreign visitors to Japan for December 2023 and for the year.
The single month of December recorded a record high of 2,734,000 visitors, 108.2% over the same month in 2019, and JNTO believes that increases in South Korea, Taiwan, and the U.S. were the main factors pushing up the number of visitors. Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, and Australia also set new single-month records.
The cumulative total for 2023 is 2,506,100, a recovery that has progressed to 78.6% of the 2019 level. Especially since the elimination of waterfront measures in April, the number has been rising steadily and rapidly, exceeding 100% of the 2019 level for the first time in a single month in October.
The government’s Fourth Basic Plan for the Promotion of Tourism Nation, formulated in March 2023, sets three goals for 2025: “sustainable tourism,” “increase in consumption,” and “promotion of regional visitors,” and JNTO will work on strategic promotion of inbound travel to Japan.
