On January 17, JAL held a regular press conference at its headquarters in Shinagawa, Tokyo, where Yuji Akasaka, President and Representative Director, and Mitsuko Tottori, Senior Managing Director and Representative Director, who was newly promoted to the position of President, explained the company’s initiatives.
In his presentation, Mr. Tottori recalled that he joined the company in 1985, the year of the Flight 123 crash, and that he has spent most of his career in the safety and service field. In June of the same year, he assumed the position of Representative Director and Senior Executive Officer, General Manager of the Customer Experience Division and Group CCO (Chief Customer Officer).
Mr. Tottori said that he wondered whether he was the right person to assume the position of president, but decided to accept the position based on the difficulties he and his trusted colleagues have overcome in the past. To that end, if we can become a company where people want to work here and where each and every employee can demonstrate his or her abilities, we can become the airline of choice for customers.
When asked about her unique perspective as a woman, she replied, “I don’t think of myself as a man or a woman. I want to do things my own way. I have been doing it in a style where I find breakthroughs through discussions with my colleagues. What I like about myself is that I draw out the strengths of people who have something I don’t have.
