Naoki Wakabayashi’s Travel Photo Gallery] Temples in the Old City (Chiang Mai, Thailand)

Posted on December 31, 2023 by News Admin

Chiang Mai, the second largest city in northern Thailand, is a beautiful old city also known as the “Rose of the North. The city is old, and the “old town” at the center of the city was surrounded by a 1.6 km square fortress wall. The town is dotted with a wide variety of stores and many temples. This time, we will introduce “Wat Chedi Luang,” “Wat Chiang Mang,” and “Wat Phrasin,” which are the most popular temples in the old town.

We used “tuk-tuks” to get around from our hotel in a town a short distance away. The price was negotiated by telling the driver where you wanted to go. If the price was too high, we refused and negotiated again at the next “tuk-tuk”. Prices are not always fair. The driver of the tuk-tuk that we boarded was very funny and even bought his own lunch on the way.

Wat Chedi Luang has the largest chedi in Chiang Mai at 98 meters high and 54 meters in diameter. The surrounding temples are gorgeous and beautiful. Wat Chiang Man, built in the traditional Thai style, was once used as a palace. At Wat Phrasin, the 50-meter-high golden chedi (Phra Mahathat Chedi) is beautiful, and the surrounding buildings and gardens are also beautiful. All of the temples are open to the public, and visitors can see the magnificent decorations.

Chiang Mai is reached via Bangkok, which takes about 10 hours. If you are physically fit, it is recommended that you take a morning flight to Chiang Mai so that you can go sightseeing with less time loss.
