The restaurant that I vowed to return to among those that opened this year.

Kaimuki Shokudo The restaurant, which opened in Kaimuki, a neighborhood lined with unique restaurants and stores as a “soba izakaya,” received a good response from the locals. An influencer friend of Rocco’s said, “Kaimuki Shokudo, it’s good!” I went there and was pleasantly surprised to find a variety of Japanese flavors. I often encounter tempura in Hawaii that is heavily battered and lumpy, but here the tempura was crispy and lightly fried. The soba had a nice aroma and made for a very satisfying lunch. My friend enjoyed the oyster soba. By the way, the locals are happy to order snacks at night and enjoy the izakaya (Japanese-style pub) atmosphere.

Kung Sukhwar Restaurant For several years now, Hawaii has seen an increase in the number of skewer restaurants where customers can enjoy skewered dishes, and BBQ-loving locals are especially fond of the style of grilling food right in front of them. One such restaurant that has opened is Kang Sukhwar Restaurant, which offers Mongolian skewers and other dishes. It is located in Mo’ili’ili, an area close to Waikiki but rarely seen by tourists. The Chinese owner of this powerful restaurant had a grand opening in Chinese style. Lamb, beef tongue, pork, chicken, and other meats are seasoned with cumin, shichimi, and other spices and served hot. In addition to skewers, the menu also includes seafood such as abalone from Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, as well as crawfish and shrimp with unique spices. All of the dishes are large in volume, making them ideal for a group visit and a meal shared by all. Looking back, I can once again see the appeal of enjoying the taste and atmosphere of a mixed culture in the area of food in the melting pot that is Hawaii. Happy Holidays!
