The Geminids meteor shower will be visible from the night of December 14 to the dawn of December 15. No moonlight, favorable conditions, and a chance to observe on the Pacific Ocean side.

Weathernews announced the nationwide weather trend from the night of December 14 to the dawn of December 15, when the Geminids meteor shower, one of the three major meteor showers, will be at its best.

On the night of the 14th, a winter pressure pattern will prevail in northern and eastern Japan, and meteor showers can be expected mainly on the Pacific Ocean side. In Tokyo, meteors will begin to rise in the eastern sky around 18:00 on the 14th. In the Kinki region, the chances will be better in the early hours, and in Okinawa, which will be covered by high pressure, clear skies are expected to provide good conditions for observation.

This year, the new moon on the 13th will provide the best conditions for observation because there will be no influence of moonlight and the peak will be at the time when the radiant point is high in the sky and the number of meteors is increasing.

The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) estimates that the number of emission points observed in dark areas will exceed 30 per hour around 21:00 on the 14th, and may reach 70 per hour between midnight and 3:00 on the 15th, when the emission points reach high in the sky.

Weather News LiVE, a 24-hour live weather information program, will broadcast a special program on the night of the 14th, featuring live coverage of the Geminids meteor shower. People in areas where meteor observation is difficult or people who want to watch meteors in a warm room can also enjoy the show.
