Daily yogurt eaters found to have higher antibody titers for new corona flu

Posted on November 30, 2023 by News Admin

An interim report was presented on the joint research being conducted by the Kanagawa Prefectural Institute of Industrial Technology, Kanagawa Prefectural Hospital Organization Kanagawa Cancer Center, Kanagawa Prefectural University of Health and Welfare, Metagen, and Meiji.

The project is analyzing the lifestyle and intestinal environment of new coronavirus antibody carriers with the aim of gaining chemical knowledge for countermeasures against new pandemics that may occur in the future. The study has revealed that yogurt consumption may improve antibody titers and immune function against various viruses.

It was found that those who ate yogurt daily had higher novel coronavirus vaccine antibody titers and a higher percentage of immune cells (T cells) that reacted to novel coronavirus than those who did not eat yogurt daily. These results were also observed in a multivariate analysis that excluded the effects of the number of times the new coronavirus vaccine was taken, the presence or absence of new coronavirus infection, age, and other factors, suggesting that the effect of the yogurt intake habit was more clearly demonstrated. A previous study also reported that yogurt consumption increased the antibody titer of the influenza vaccine, suggesting that yogurt consumption may enhance immune function against a variety of viruses.

Using the research results of the project as a starting point, the project aims to advocate new preventive practices against emerging viral infections, including the new coronavirus.
