JICA President Shinichi Kitaoka met with UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi in Tokyo on July 22. They confirmed the importance of further developing the long-standing UNHCR-JICA collaboration and exchanged views on the impact of the new coronavirus disease crisis on refugees and displaced persons, as well as the situation in Myanmar, Latin America, Afghanistan, and other countries. The participants agreed to deepen their collaboration to assist refugees and displaced persons who have been socio-economically affected by the new coronavirus infection, affirming that partnerships between humanitarian and development agencies are more important than ever before. On the situation in Myanmar, the participants reaffirmed the importance of the international community working together to steadily implement humanitarian assistance to address the challenges of the coup d’état and internally displaced persons. Regarding the situation in Latin America, both sides confirmed that the region continues to be unstable due to inequality and governance issues, and that inclusive development is required.
High Commissioner Grundy also expressed his hope that the two organizations will further strengthen their collaboration in preparation for TICAD 8 to be held in Tunisia next year.
JICA will continue to cooperate with UNHCR and contribute to solving refugee problems through humanitarian and development partnerships.
