Grant Aid Agreement Signed for Togo: Bypass Construction to Ensure Smooth Transportation along the Togo Corridor | News / Media

Posted on November 22, 2023 by News Admin

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the Government of the Republic of Togo on November 17 in Lome for a grant of up to 4,018 million yen for the “Sokodé City Bypass Road Construction Project. The Togo Corridor, which runs through the Republic of Togo from north to south, connects Lome, the capital of Togo, which has a port, to Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, a landlocked country, and is a lifeline for logistics not only to Burkina Faso but also to the Republic of Mali, Republic of Niger, and Republic of Chad. The corridor consists mainly of National Route 1 in the country and National Route 17, which branches westward from Sokodé, a city in the central part of the country located on National Route 1. In recent years, the increase in traffic volume caused by the construction of the Togo Corridor has resulted in traffic congestion in Sokode City, which has slowed down logistics and increased traffic accidents with pedestrians and motorcyclists. In light of this situation, the construction of a bypass that bypasses the city of Sokode is expected to direct through traffic in downtown Sokode to the bypass, avoiding congestion in the city and ensuring traffic safety, while contributing to the facilitation of logistics on National Highway 1 and National Highway 17.

This project will contribute to the revitalization of economic activities in the Republic of Togo and landlocked countries through improving the efficiency of the entire Togo Corridor, and will contribute to SDG Goal 3 (health and welfare for all), Goal 9 (create the basis for industrial and technological innovation) and Goal 13 (concrete measures against climate change).

For the detailed design of this project, a grant agreement for a grant aid of up to 79 million yen was concluded in January 2023. For the detailed design of this project, a grant agreement for a grant aid of up to 79 million yen was concluded in January 2023.
