Background and Objectives

In the Dominican Republic, most waste is open dumping.

The National Waste Management System and Capacity Strengthening Project Phase 2 was launched in 2020 with the Ministry of Environment as C/P.

Seminar on the project’s outcome, a manual for waste disposal sites

There are four manuals: Closure and Rehabilitation of Final Landfill Sites, New Landfill Sites, Operation and Management, and Environmental and Social Considerations.

The results will be carried over to the “Integrated Waste Management Capacity Improvement Project” to be carried out under a yen loan.

On Tuesday, October 3 and Thursday, October 5, the National Integrated Waste Management System and Capacity Strengthening Project Phase 2 and the Ministry of the Environment, as C/P, held the “Seminar on Final Landfill Management Technical Manual” at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. The seminar was opened by the Minister of Environment, Mr. Miguel Hatton, the Japanese Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Mr. Takagi, and the Director of JICA, Mr. Sakaguchi. Currently, most of the waste in the Dominican Republic is open dumping. From now on, in accordance with the national plan, open dumping sites throughout the country will be closed and sanitary landfills will be constructed, utilizing the manuals prepared by the project. A total of 263 waste management professionals, both on-site and online, participated over the two days to learn about waste management using the manual.
