Ceremony Held to Mark Completion of Port of Nacala, Key Port of Southeast Africa’s Nacala Economic Corridor: Hopes for Enhanced Connectivity between Mozambique and Neighboring Countries, Improved Logistics, and Economic Benefits | News / Media

Posted on October 25, 2023 by News Admin

On October 7, a ceremony was held in Nacala City, Nampula Province, Republic of Mozambique (hereinafter “Mozambique”) to celebrate the completion of the Nacala Port Development Project (I) and (II), which was financed by a yen loan.

The Mozambican side included President Nyusi and Minister of Transport and Communications Magara, while the Japanese side included Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Yasushi Hosaka, Ambassador Hajime Kimura, JICA Director-General for Africa Naoki Yanase, and JICA Mozambique Office Director Kazuya Otsuka. In addition, President Hichilema of the Republic of Zambia (“Zambia”) and President Chakwera of the Republic of Malawi (“Malawi”) also attended the ceremony, which showed the high expectations for the port.

The Port of Nacala is the gateway to the Nacala Corridor, which leads to the landlocked countries of Malawi and Zambia, and is the best natural port in southeastern Africa. In recent years, Japan has been cooperating with the public and private sectors in terms of investment promotion.

The port had not been adequately renovated since its facilities were built in the 1970s, and some of the facilities were deteriorating and damaged due to the hurricanes. To address this situation, JICA implemented the “Port of Nacala Emergency Rehabilitation Plan” grant aid in 2012, and in 2013 concluded a yen loan agreement for Phase 1 of the “Port of Nacala Development Project” to enable further cargo increase and logistics improvement, and in 2015 concluded a yen loan agreement for Phase 2.
