Weathernews releases “Second Autumn Foliage Viewing Forecast. Late summer heat on record brings later-than-normal viewing in northern Japan.

Posted on October 17, 2023 by News Admin

On October 12, Weathernews released the “Second Autumn Foliage Viewing Forecast” for the fall foliage season.

The start of the fall foliage was delayed in northern Japan this year due to the record-breaking late summer heat, but the autumn air finally began to envelop the country in late September, and the coloring of the leaves is expected to continue through November. In northern Japan, many areas will see slightly later than normal, but in eastern and western Japan, the season is expected to be on par with the average for the year.

The summer weather has also affected the vividness of the leaves, and while colors and shapes tend to be not as good as last year, especially in northern Japan and Hokuriku, many of the best viewing spots (especially in southern Tohoku, eastern Japan, and western Japan) are expected to have many sunny days, so vivid autumn foliage is expected.

As for the typhoon in September, it does not seem to have a major impact on the autumn foliage in Chiba, Ibaraki, and Fukushima prefectures that were damaged, as the best time to view the autumn leaves is still some time away. However, some mountain areas in Hokkaido where a low pressure system developed late last week caused leaves to fall, so we recommend early viewing of the autumn leaves.

Weathernews plans to release the “Third Autumn Foliage Viewing Forecast” in early November. In addition, Weathernews, the company’s weather information service, provides forecast dates, spot information, and pinpoint weather forecasts for approximately 900 famous places nationwide.
