Ikaruga Town, Nara Prefecture, will hold “Horyuji Temple Special Light-up in Ikaruga Town” from October 21 to November 5 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of its World Heritage registration.
Horyu-ji Temple (1-1, Sannai 1, Horyu-ji, Ikaruga-cho, Ikoma-gun, Nara Prefecture), the first temple in Japan to be registered as a World Heritage site, will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2023. This time, lighting and projection mapping will be used to enhance the historical formations in the National Treasure Nandaimon. The digital artwork will be directed and produced by Naked.
The earthen walls towering at both ends of Nandaimon will be painted with autumn scenes to create a fantastic evening. The pine forest that symbolizes the mountain path of Horyuji Temple will also be illuminated with lights and music.
In addition, “NAKED Distance Lanterns” will be available as a participatory artwork in which participants can join in the light production. A circle of light from a lantern held in the hand is projected on the ground, making visitors feel as if they are part of the production.
On October 28, the “DANDELION PROJECT,” an art project conceived by artist Ryotaro Muramatsu, was launched. When visitors blow on the “DANDELION,” a large interactive art object of a dandelion, digital fluff will fly to the dandelion installed in another location, causing it to bloom into a digital flower.
