Naoki Wakabayashi’s Travel Photo Gallery] Ta Prohm, a ruin covered with banyan trees (Cambodia)

Posted on September 6, 2023 by News Admin

Ta Prohm” is one of the Angkorian archaeological sites in Cambodia, located about 8 km northeast of Angkor Wat.

This site is famous for its ruins encroached by giant sprawling banyan trees and has been used as a movie location. 640 monks lived here in a Buddhist temple built by the Khmer Dynasty in the late 12th century. Later, the temple was renovated into a Hindu temple, or left unattended due to a change of government.

During the Pol Pot regime, many temples were destroyed and buried in the jungle. When the Ta Prohm temple was discovered here, it was eroded by many trees, creating a special landscape. Currently, many universities and research institutes, including those in Japan, are working to restore the temple and preserve the ruins.

Located about 12 km from the town of Siem Reap, which is the base for sightseeing in Angkor, you will be greatly impressed by this spectacular scenery when you see it up close. It is recommended to visit this site along with Angkor Wat.
