On August 17, the Hawaii Tourism Authority began accepting Japanese yen for relief funds for the wildfires in western Maui.
A massive wildfire broke out on Maui on August 8 (local time), devastating Lahaina, once the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii, and leaving many confirmed casualties.
The Hawaii Tourism Authority has set up a website to accept donations in Japanese yen in response to the disaster. All donations will be given to the Maui Strong Fund, established by the Hawaii Community Foundation, and will be used for relief efforts and recovery assistance.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green has issued a statement that non-essential travel to western Maui (including Lahaina, Napili, Kaanapali, and Kapalua) is discouraged until August 31, and hotels there are not currently accepting reservations (other areas of Maui and other Hawaiian Islands such as Oahu are not affected). (Other areas of Maui and other Hawaiian islands such as Oahu are unaffected.)
