Signing of Minutes of Development Plan Study-type Technical Cooperation Discussion for Ecuador: Contributing to Efforts to Achieve Zero Fossil Fuel Emissions in the Galapagos Islands | News & Media

Posted on August 15, 2023 by News Admin

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions (R/D) with the Government of the Republic of Ecuador on August 3 in Quito for the “Galapagos Islands Fossil Fuel Zero Roadmap Support Project,” a development program study-type technical cooperation.

The Galapagos Islands are listed as a World Natural Heritage site because of their valuable ecosystem. Therefore, reducing the impact on the environment is a priority, but the reality is that the majority of the region’s electricity supply is provided by fossil fuel-derived thermal power generation. In order to achieve sustainable development in the Galapagos Islands, including environmental conservation and climate change countermeasures, and in anticipation of future population growth and further development of tourism, there is a growing need to switch from fossil fuel use to renewable energy and promote energy conservation.

This project will confirm the renewable energy potential in the Galapagos Islands and propose a plan to optimize the hybrid power generation system using diesel and renewable energy and to realize energy conservation.

Through these efforts, we aim to achieve sustainable and efficient energy production and consumption in the target regions, in line with the Zero Fossil Fuel Policy. Through these collaborations, we will contribute to SDG Goal 7 (Energy for All and Cleaner) and Goal 13 (Tangible Action on Climate Change).
