The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) took the opportunity of the G7 Summit held in Hiroshima on May 21 to conclude a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Nusantara National Capital Authority (NNCA) of the Republic of Indonesia (hereinafter referred to as “Indonesia”) on cooperation for the development of a new capital city. The memorandum of understanding for cooperation in the development of the new capital city was concluded with the Nusantara National Capital Authority (“NNCA”).
The plan to relocate the capital of Indonesia to the island of Kalimantan is based on a plan to address Jakarta’s chronic traffic congestion, land subsidence, and frequent flooding, as well as to contribute to the balanced development of all of Indonesia through the development of Eastern Indonesia, The New Capital Bill was passed in January 2022 and the New Capital Authority was established in March of the same year.
On the occasion of the MOU, JICA Vice President Junichi Yamada also met with Mr. Bambang Susantono, Director General of the New Capital City Authority, in Hiroshima City on the 21st of the same month.
At the meeting, Vice President Yamada introduced JICA’s past efforts in the development of the new Indonesian capital, including support for the Indonesian government to improve the quality of construction of basic infrastructure in the new capital and provision of information to encourage Japanese companies to consider investment in the new capital, and discussed future cooperation. The two parties exchanged opinions on future cooperation.
Through the conclusion of this MOU, JICA will further strengthen its cooperative relationship with the New Capital Agency and continue to work toward solving Indonesia’s development challenges while further deepening its partnership with Indonesia.
