IHG x Mori Trust to open Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street in winter 2024. Concept incorporates Japanese, Chinese, and Dutch culture

Posted on May 29, 2023 by News Admin

IHG Hotels & Resorts and Mori Trust announced on May 24 that they have signed a partnership agreement and will open Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street (12-17 Minamiyamate-cho, Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture) in winter 2024.

The first Hotel Indigo brand in western Japan will be the fifth Hotel Indigo in Japan, following Hakone Gora, Karuizawa, Inuyama Yurakuen, and Tokyo Shibuya, which has already opened and will open in September 2023.

Speaking at the press conference, Miwako Date, President and Representative Director of Mori Trust, explained that Nagasaki, the planned site of the project, is an area that has attracted attention in terms of tourism and business in recent years with the opening of Dejima Messe Nagasaki and the West Kyushu Shinkansen, and that Minami Yamate-cho is located on a hill overlooking Nagasaki Port and in an exotic area that was a foreign settlement area from the late Edo to Meiji periods. He also explained that Minamiyamate-cho is located on a hill overlooking the Port of Nagasaki and is within walking distance of the Old Glover House, an Important Cultural Property, where British merchants once lived, and the national treasure, the Oura Tenshudo (Main Buddha Hall).

The hotel will have approximately 70 guest rooms, with three floors above ground and one below. The concept of the hotel is based on Nagasaki’s unique “Waka Orchid Culture,” a mixture of Japanese, Chinese, and Dutch orchid characteristics, and the hotel plans to incorporate these elements into the guest rooms, but at this time, the average room size and room types have not been disclosed.

Mr. Date also pointed out the lack of new hotel openings in the region over the past 20-30 years, and emphasized the important role that new hotels will play in attracting Generation Z to the area.

Mr. Abhijay Sandilia, Managing Director of IHG Hotels & Resorts Japan & Micronesia and CEO of IHG-ANA Hotels Group Japan, explained the development of the Hotel Indigo brand. IHG positions the brand as a lifestyle boutique hotel, and each store is designed with a “Neighborhood Story” as its motto.

The main theme of this year’s event is “Wakaoran Labyrinth, a journey through time and space” rooted in Nagasaki’s Wakaoran culture, and will feature a setting reminiscent of the end of the Edo and Meiji periods to create an uplifting atmosphere for guests.
