JR East to equip a single locker with four functions: reservation, deposit, receiving, and shipping. Stations to become logistics hubs.

Posted on May 13, 2023 by News Admin

JR East will promote the multifunctionalization of lockers, whose main use is for deposit and withdrawal.

In addition to enhancing the availability search function on the web application, the company will link logistics providers and e-commerce sites to the delivery platform. By integrating the four functions of reservation, deposit, receiving, and shipping into a single locker, the company aims to make the station a logistics hub.

Approximately 1,000 of the new lockers (approximately 30,000 units) will be installed in the Tokyo metropolitan area over the next three years. By fluctuating the number of locker units allocated to each service in response to demand, the company will provide services suited to the needs of each station. In addition, lockers equipped with refrigeration functions will also be introduced to create an environment that can accommodate a variety of deposit and pickup services.

This will make it possible for customers to receive products they have applied for on the e-commerce site at stations along their lifeline. In the future, products from Ekinaka and station buildings will also be available for pickup outside of business hours. In addition, the company will promote the receipt of products directly sent from production areas using the Hakobun train luggage transportation service, as well as receipt in cooperation with dry cleaners and pharmacies.

In conjunction with the multifunctional lockers, a new company, JR East Smart Logistics, will be established by integrating the locker business of Tokyo Station Service and the locker business of JR East Kankyo Access. The date of establishment of the company will be July 3.
