President Tanaka meets with diplomatic delegations from 21 Latin American and Caribbean countries

On April 12, JICA President Akihiko Tanaka met with ambassadors and other representatives of 21 Latin American and Caribbean countries in Tokyo.

The meeting was called by the Group of Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC), a diplomatic corps composed of 21 Latin American countries currently stationed in Tokyo.

During the meeting, the ambassadors expressed the importance of diverse cooperation to the Latin American and Caribbean region as a whole, which has different characteristics, and triangular cooperation that takes advantage of linguistic and regional commonalities. Furthermore, the Ambassadors also discussed cooperation with regional organizations such as the Pacific Alliance, the Central American Integration Organization (SICA), the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the Latin American Development Bank (CAF), and expressed hope for cooperation on common regional development issues such as renewable energy, hydrogen, and marine plastics. The participants also expressed their expectations for cooperation on common development issues in the region, such as renewable energy, hydrogen, and marine plastics.

The ambassadors expressed their high confidence in Japan and JICA, with which they have cooperated in various ways over the years, and their expectations for new cooperation that further utilizes Japan’s experience and technology. JICA and the ambassadors reaffirmed that JICA is an important partner in the development of Latin America and the Caribbean.

JICA President Tanaka, who participated in the meeting, also mentioned the presence of the Nikkei community in the region and expressed his respect for their contribution as a bridge between the region and Japan.

JICA will continue to work closely with countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to contribute to solving development issues in each country and region.

The meeting was attended by Costa Rican Ambassador to Tokyo Alexander Salas Araya, Secretary of the Group of Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC), as well as the Ambassadors of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, The Ambassadors of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela were also present.
