Local Souvenir Selection] “Jingu Sugi” and “Boshell” from Ise-Shima Souvenirs

Among the many gourmet foods and sightseeing spots in Mie Prefecture, this issue focuses on Ise-Shima, home to the Ise Jingu Shrine, which has a history of more than 2,000 years and is famous for its traditional Japanese sweets such as Akafuku and Iwato mochi (rice cakes). In fact, there is also a wide variety of stylish and high-end Western-style confectionery souvenirs.

A visit to the Ise Jingu Shrine, which dominated the Edo period (1603-1867), is still a popular travel theme, known as “Oise-mairi,” or “once-in-a-lifetime visit to Ise (Oin-mairi).

Shirase is a long-established confectionery store located about a five-minute walk from the local Ise City Station. The “Jingu-sugi” baumkuchen (baumkuchen with a motif of Japanese cedar, the main tree that grows in the Shinto shrine area and is also the prefectural tree of Mie) is a standard souvenir of Ise.

Handmade by artisans using traditional methods, the dough is not only beautifully layered, but also has an exquisite texture that is both fluffy and moist. It is not too sweet, and the egg flavor fills the mouth.
