Signing of Yen Loan Agreement for Egypt: Contributing to Achieving Universal Health Coverage

Posted on April 2, 2023 by News Admin

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Loan Agreement (L/A) of up to 44 billion yen with the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt for “Development Policy Loan for Universal Health Coverage” in Cairo on March 27.

Universal Health Coverage (UHC), which means “access to appropriate health care services for all people at a cost they can afford,” is one of the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Against the backdrop of Egypt’s rapid population growth, the spread of new coronavirus infection, and soaring prices, there is an ever-greater need for a system that enables citizens to access healthcare services at public healthcare facilities with peace of mind and does not lead to poverty due to the payment of healthcare costs. Egypt has been working to introduce a universal health insurance system since 2018, but it faces financial constraints and other challenges.

In light of this situation, this project aims to promote the implementation of a universal health coverage system, including the improvement of the quality of health care systems and health services, by providing financial support, thereby contributing to the achievement of universal health coverage, economic and social stability, and the promotion of development efforts, thereby contributing to SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goals 1 (End Poverty), 3 (Health and Welfare for All), and 10 (Eliminate Inequality among People and Nations). It contributes to SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goal 1 (End Poverty), 3 (Health and Welfare for All), and 10 (Reduce Inequality among People and Nations).

Details of the project are as follows
