Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden (4512-150 Kita-Rokko, Rokko-machi, Nada-ku, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture), operated by Rokko Sightseeing, announced that the colony of Mizubasho, a flower that heralds the arrival of spring, is now at its best.
In northern countries such as Hokkaido and the Tohoku region, the flowers that herald spring are said to be “Mizubashou” and “Kobushi” rather than cherry blossoms, and at the Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden, Mizubashou are said to be blooming one after another as the temperature rises.
The most conspicuous white part is a deformed leaf called a “fukubafurazuma bract,” and the yellow part that blooms as if encased in the bract is a cluster of flowers. At the Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden, approximately 600 Mizubashou plants are cultivated so that visitors can see them in an environment close to nature, and they can be enjoyed until mid-April.
Until July 2, a special event commemorating the 90th anniversary of the park’s opening will also be held. About 200 items, including calligraphy by botanist Dr. Tomitaro Makino, are on display.
