G-SHOCK has looked at a 40th anniversary model with deep hardening treatment on stainless steel.

In addition to the DW-5040PG, based on the DW-5000, which will be commercialized only in the anniversary project, the lineup will include the GMW-B5000PG and GMW-B5000PS, based on the metal GMW-B5000.

G-Shock’s 40th anniversary models have been “Flare Red” and “Adventurer’s Stone. The new products to be introduced this time follow the concept of previous models, including the first generation “DW-5000C” that debuted in 1983, while incorporating new exterior technologies and other innovations.

GMW-B5000PS/PG (121,000 yen)

The GMW-B5000PS and GMW-B5000PG are based on the GMW-B5000D, a fully metalized model that retains the form of the first DW-5000C. Exterior parts such as the bezel and band are made of high-hardness stainless steel.

In addition, a new recrystallization treatment and deep hardening treatment have been developed for stainless steel. This treatment realizes approximately three times the hardness of ordinary stainless steel, and until now it has been applied only to the titanium material of the top-of-the-line “MR-G” series. This treatment has not been used for stainless steel because it is difficult to apply this treatment to stainless steel and is not suitable for mass production.

The treatment process begins with high-temperature heat treatment of the base stainless steel material to recrystallize it, resulting in a crystalline pattern that appears as if fine metal shards are scattered on the matte-textured surface. After this, when carbon gas is infiltrated into the material through deep hardening treatment, the crystals are stabilized and further patterns appear. These treatments create a hard layer on the surface of the stainless steel, making it sturdier. Finally, the surface is treated with TIC for the silver models and IP for the gold models. Since the crystal grains appear differently on each part, each piece has its own unique pattern, color tone, and luster.

In terms of design, the bezel was purposely not finished with a hairline finish to accentuate the characteristic design of the deep hardening treatment. On the other hand, the buttons had a mirror finish, and the buckle had a hairline finish despite the deep hardening treatment, creating a contrast in the texture of each part. On the case back, the 40th anniversary logo is clearly visible by laser irradiation over the deep hardening treatment.
