Grant Aid to Ethiopia: Contributing to the Safe Supply of Water through the Development of Water Supply Facilities

Posted on March 23, 2023 by News Admin

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on March 10 in Addis Ababa for a grant of up to 2.615 billion yen for the “Small Urban Water Supply Facility Project in Oromia Region. The agreement was signed by and among the government of the Oromia Oblast and the Oromia Oblast.

In Ethiopia, access to safely controlled water is only 13%. There are many cases of waterborne diseases caused by drinking unsafe water and other factors, and diarrhea accounts for 8% of deaths among children under 5 years of age. In addition, 63% of the water pumping workers are women aged 15 or older, and water pumping is one of the factors preventing women from going to school and working. Furthermore, the eastern part of Africa, which includes the Horn of Africa, has been experiencing the worst drought in 40 years due to the lack of rainfall since around 2020, and the improvement of water supply facilities is an urgent issue.

This project aims to improve access to safe water through the construction of piped water supply facilities (including deep wells, distribution pipes, and administrative buildings) in six small cities in two prefectures in the Oromia Region. This project is expected to contribute to the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goal 3 (health and welfare for all), 6 (safe water and toilets worldwide), and 13 (concrete measures against climate change) by providing safe water supply in the target areas. (concrete measures to combat climate change).

The details of the project are as follows
