Cherry blossoms in 2023 will start blooming from Tokyo on March 15. Expected to match the fastest record.

Posted on March 18, 2023 by News Admin

Weathernews released the “5th Cherry Blossom Bloom Prediction.

Cherry blossoms are expected to bloom earlier than normal in many areas in 2023. In particular, the bloom will be very early in the Kanto and southern Tohoku regions, but late in some areas in southern Kyushu and Hokkaido, where it was early last year.

The cherry blossoms are expected to bloom in Tokyo on March 15, ahead of the rest of Japan, tying the fastest record; on March 17, they will bloom in Fukuoka and Yokohama, and will continue to bloom in western and eastern Japan in late March; by the end of March, they will begin blooming in Hokuriku and southern Tohoku. In Hokkaido, the cherry blossom front is expected to land in late April, and bloom in Hakodate on April 23. In most locations, the cherry blossoms are expected to be in full bloom within 5 to 10 days after the blooming, which is earlier than normal.

The change from the 4th cherry blossom forecast is that the forecasted bloom date has been moved up by 1 to 3 days in the Tohoku to Kyushu regions, reflecting the warmer-than-normal temperatures during the past week and the growth of buds based on the “Cherry Blossom Survey,” as well as the fact that the next week will be as warm as late April. The “Cherry Blossom Bud Survey” is a survey of cherry blossom buds in Japan. According to the results of the “Cherry Blossom Bud Survey,” the majority of buds nationwide were still small and hard, but the percentage of buds that turned yellow or green at the tips increased, indicating that buds are growing at the same or slightly faster pace than last year. Daily temperatures will have a significant impact on bud growth in the future.
