Signature of Technical Cooperation Project Discussion Minutes for Fiji: Helping to Improve Water Supply Efficiency through Non-Revenue Water Reduction

Posted on March 4, 2023 by News Admin

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions (R/D) with the Government of the Republic of Fiji on February 22 in Suva for the technical cooperation project “Capacity Building for Non-Revenue Water Control in Nadi Lautoka District”.

The Nadi Lautoka District is an important center of the tourism industry as well as the sugar and manufacturing industries, and the demand for water is expected to increase with the recent increase in population and tourists. Although the water supply system has not kept pace with the development of water sources and facilities, the financial impact of the global pandemic of the new coronavirus infection has made it difficult to implement large-scale infrastructure investment within the next 10 years.

This project will improve the capacity of the Fiji Water and Sewerage Authority (WAF) in the Nadi Lautoka District to address non-revenue water issues such as leakage reduction, and to raise water conservation awareness among the residents of the target area. This will reduce non-revenue water in the district and improve the efficiency of water supply to residents, thereby contributing to SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) Goal 6 (Provide safe water and toilets to all over the world).

(*)Non-revenue water: Water that has not been billed due to leakage from distribution pipes, illegal connections (stolen water), water meter errors, etc.

The details of the project are as follows
