President Tanaka meets with Green Climate Fund Executive Director Grémarec

Posted on March 4, 2023 by News Admin

On February 8, JICA President Akihiko Tanaka met with Yannick Grémarec, Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund (GCF, Note 1). Mr. Gremarek has announced that he will step down from his position in March of this year.

At the beginning of the meeting, President Tanaka expressed his gratitude to Director-General Grémarec for his past cooperation and efforts in forming and promoting JICA’s partnership project with the GCF (Note 2).

In response, Director General Grémarec thanked JICA for its cooperation and said that further cooperation is important to combat climate change.

The two parties exchanged views on the importance of taking advantage of Japan’s knowledge and experience to engage in proactive disaster reduction investment (Note 3).

Note 1: The Green Climate Fund (GCF) was established in 2010 to administer the financial mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It supports developing countries in reducing greenhouse gas emissions (mitigation measures) and addressing the impacts of climate change (adaptation measures).

Note 2: JICA is positioned as a “certifying agency” that can implement climate change projects using GCF funds, and a total of two GCF-linked projects have been approved so far in Timor-Leste and the Maldives.

Note 3: By investing in advance in measures to mitigate damage, the project aims to protect the lives and livelihoods of local residents and reduce the total cost of disaster response, recovery, and reconstruction.
