Juba City Clean Water Supply Project

Posted on March 3, 2023 by News Admin

In South Sudan, infrastructure is inadequate to handle the rapid increase in water demand due to the growing population of people returning to the country after independence. As a result, many residents rely on shallow wells and water trucks that transport and sell river water as it is, causing problems such as water-borne diseases caused by the poor quality of the water and pressure on household budgets due to the purchase of water. The Japanese government is supporting the formulation of a basic plan for the water supply project in Juba City, proposing necessary water supply facilities, and cooperating in the construction of a new water purification plant. The South Sudan Urban Water Corporation (SSUWC) is responsible for urban water supply services in the country, but it lacks the knowledge and technology to properly operate and maintain water supply facilities, making it difficult to distribute safe water in a sustainable manner.

To this end, the Japanese government was supporting the development of basic capacity as a water utility, as well as improving the capacity of the SSUWC Juba branch office and strengthening the supervisory capability of the headquarters. In the past cooperation, while it was difficult to dispatch Japanese experts due to the disturbances and the corona disaster that occurred in the country, we have made efforts to develop capacity by making full use of remote training and other means.

This cooperation will support further capacity building of SSUWC Juba Branch Office staff in the operation and maintenance of water supply facilities and collection of water charges, thereby strengthening the service delivery capacity of the SSUWC Juba Branch Office and contributing to the reliable supply of safe and clean water in the city.
