The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah on February 19 for a grant of up to 1.06 billion yen for the “Infectious Waste Management Improvement Project”.
With the recent spread and prolongation of new coronavirus infections worldwide, the amount of infectious waste generated by medical facilities in Palestine has continued to increase. The Regional Administrative Council, which provides waste management services, has been experiencing a sharp increase in the burden of waste collection, transportation, detoxification, and final disposal.
In light of this situation, the project aims to strengthen the infectious waste management system in the West Bank by providing the necessary equipment for detoxification, collection, transportation, and final disposal of infectious waste in the West Bank. This project will contribute to the prevention of the spread of waste-derived infectious diseases, and will contribute to Goal 3 (health and welfare for all) and Goal 11 (creating a livable community) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
