The region from the Peruvian Andes to the Amazon maintains a diverse ecosystem due to the various environments created by the different altitudes. In recent years, however, the forest area has been decreasing due to illegal logging, conversion to agricultural land through settlement, and other production activities, including deforestation without proper management plans. In addition, forest fires have been increasing in frequency and scale due to intense drought, which is believed to be a result of climate change. A system to evaluate the recovery process from deforestation, forest degradation, and forest fires, and to determine the optimal land use pattern for water resource use will lead to the development of forest management methods to realize a sustainable mountain ecosystem in harmony with global issues and local needs, and will contribute to the stability of not only the mountain ecosystem but also the entire watershed, including downstream areas. This will have a ripple effect that will lead to social stability not only for the mountain ecosystem but also for the entire watershed, including downstream areas.
In this cooperation, in the region from the Andes to the Amazon in southern Peru, we will develop and apply a forest management system model that takes into account land use change over time, quantitative assessment of deforestation and forest degradation, assessment of forest recovery process after fire disturbance, development of landscape optimization system using water resources model, their scientific basis and socioeconomic status of the community The project will develop and apply forest management system models that take into account the conservation and sustainable use of forest ecosystem services by residents, and contribute to the dissemination of forest management system models that promote the conservation and sustainable use of montane forest ecosystems.
