Plan for Capacity Improvement of Electricity Supply in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Posted on February 22, 2023 by News Admin

The South Andaman Island of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, one of the islands under India’s Union Territory, is home to Port Blair, the seat of the executive branch, and is the center of economic activity with 63 percent of the total population of the islands. The South Andaman power system, which covers the South Andaman Island, has experienced frequent power generation inefficiencies and breakdowns due to the aging of the diesel power plant facilities and related equipment, and power outages have seriously affected industrial activities.

Under these circumstances, under the central government’s policy of promoting the introduction of renewable energy, the Electricity Department of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar is moving forward with plans to introduce solar power generation facilities while moving forward with plans to introduce LNG-fired power generation facilities with relatively low CO2 emissions as a replacement for diesel generation. In addition, an energy management center is planned to remotely control solar and thermal power generation to maximize the introduction of solar power while maintaining grid stability. However, for solar power generation, the current grid operation does not have the equipment and capacity to charge surplus power during the daytime and discharge it during peak hours at night, making the introduction of storage batteries a challenge. In addition, the introduction of highly responsive storage batteries is also needed to establish emergency backup systems for LNG-fired power generation facilities and other facilities, and to achieve a stable supply of electricity.

Under this cooperation, storage batteries and related facilities will be installed on South Andaman Island to effectively utilize renewable energy-derived power and stabilize the power supply, thereby contributing to strengthening industrial competitiveness.
