International Emergency Relief Teams and Rescue Teams Return to Japan for Earthquake Damage in Turkey

Immediately after the earthquake hit the southeastern part of the Republic of Turkey, Japan dispatched an international rescue team to Kahramanmaraş, which was severely damaged by the earthquake, and quickly carried out rescue activities. On the 10th, a medical team was dispatched, and on the 13th, a Self-Defense Forces aircraft quickly and surely delivered necessary equipment and materials to the team, thereby continuing to provide the utmost support for the people affected by the disaster.

As for search and rescue activities, more than a week has passed since the earthquake, and local needs have changed from rescue to disaster recovery, rescue teams from various countries are now working to return to their home countries. In light of this situation, Japan has decided to complete the mission of the rescue team and will return to Japan on the 15th of tomorrow.

The government of the Republic of Turkey expressed its gratitude for the prompt dispatch of the Japanese rescue team and its past activities.

Japan will continue to support the Republic of Turkey through the provision of emergency relief supplies and emergency assistance through ODA, in addition to continuing its human resource contribution through the International Emergency Relief Team.

(1) International Emergency Rescue Team: A search and rescue team that responds to urban disasters in the field known as USAR (Urban Search and Rescue). They have expertise in rescuing injured people from under collapsed buildings and other structures damaged by earthquakes and other disasters.

(2) Following the earthquake on February 6, the Japanese government decided to dispatch an international emergency rescue team to Turkey on the same day. The first team (advance team) of the rescue team left Japan on February 6 and started search and rescue activities on February 7 (local time).
