Dispatch of International Emergency Relief Teams and Medical Teams to Earthquake Damage in the Republic of Turkey (Second Report)

At the request of the Government of the Republic of Turkey, JICA dispatched the first contingent of an international emergency relief team and medical team to the southeastern part of the Republic of Turkey in response to the devastating earthquake that struck the country.

Disaster Situation

At 10:17 a.m. Japan time (4:17 a.m. local time) on February 6, an earthquake occurred with its epicenter near Kahramanmaraş province in southeastern Turkey. The following is a summary of the damage to date.

Deaths 38,044

Injured 108,068 people

Evacuees 216,347

Collapsed buildings: approx. 19,000

Dispatch of International Emergency Relief Teams and Medical Teams

On February 10, following a request from the government of the Republic of Turkey on February 6, the Japanese government decided to dispatch an international emergency relief team and medical team. JICA dispatched the first group (5 members) on Friday, February 10, the second group (36 members) on Sunday, February 12, the third group (28 members) on February 14, and the fourth group (6 members) on February 15, totaling 75 members.

The medical team consists of the leader, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, medical coordinators, and operations coordinators, etc. A field clinic has been established in the area and medical treatment activities have begun based on the damage situation and needs.
