CAPITALE(S)”, an exhibition tracing 60 years of Parisian street art

Posted on February 22, 2023 by News Admin

CAPITALE(S), an exhibition tracing the 60-year history of street art in Paris with 70 artists, is being held at the Paris City Hall until the end of March.

Many people may say, “Street art is just graffiti that disturbs the townscape, isn’t it?” I was one of them. I was one of them. However, there are many works that are exhibited in galleries or sold at a premium price, such as Banksy’s works, aren’t there? I wanted to know a little more about street art, so I went to an exhibition.

According to the explanation given at the exhibition, street art is an art movement that expresses itself in public spaces and is said to have originated in Philadelphia, USA, in the early 1960s. Artists in this field are said to be characterized by their political, social, and environmental messages.

There were many works that artists came to the venue and painted. Some of the works were so beautiful that they overturned my image of street art, and I looked at each one with great interest.

After the exhibition, I felt that I would be able to see street art with different eyes, so I went out to look for street art in my neighborhood. We walked around the area around the Centre Georges Pompidou Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Marais district, where there are many fashionable boutiques and galleries. Let’s take a look at what kind of street art we found!

As mapped out in the exhibition, French street artist Invader’s works are numerous in Paris, especially in this area! These works are based on the characters from the shooting game “Space Invaders,” which caused a worldwide craze. There is an official game app to find his works and get points, so it will be fun to walk around while checking them out.

I was amazed at the variety of street art, large and small, that I saw during my two-hour stroll! I was amazed at the variety of street art in the two hours I spent walking around the city!
