Sabah is a treasure trove of nature and home to Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in Southeast Asia. Let me briefly introduce the states of Sabah and Kota Kinabalu, which I visited this time. Malaysia is roughly divided into the Malay Peninsula, where Kuala Lumpur is located, and the northern part of Borneo, where Kota Kinabalu (Sabah) and Kuching (Sarawak) are located. Sabah is located between 4 and 7 degrees north latitude, so it is warm all year round and blessed with abundant rainfall and water, making it a natural treasure trove of jungles outside of the cities. The vast 73,630 km2 land, slightly smaller than Hokkaido, is home to rare animals such as orangutans, proboscis monkeys, and Borneo elephants, and is also famous as a place where Rafflesia, one of the world’s largest flowers, grows. Mount Kinabalu (4,095 meters), the highest mountain in Southeast Asia, is also located here and attracts climbers from all over the world because it is relatively easy to climb (entry is by reservation only). Kota Kinabalu, which means “City of Mount Kinabalu,” is the largest city in East Malaysia.
