Grant Aid Agreement Signed for Kyrgyzstan: Contributing to the Improvement of Medical Services through the Provision of Medical Equipment

Posted on February 13, 2023 by News Admin

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic on February 9 in Bishkek for a grant of up to 999 million yen for the “Medical Equipment Improvement Project in Bishkek City and Chui Region.

In Kyrgyzstan, non-communicable diseases (“NCDs”), including cardiovascular diseases (heart attack, stroke), cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes, account for 80% of all deaths, including among young people (2019).

Patients, including those transported from other provinces, are concentrated in the capital Bishkek and surrounding Chui Oblast, which accounts for more than 30% of the population, and the number of deaths per 100,000 people from cardiovascular diseases, one of the indicators of NCDs, is 377, much higher than the national average of 297 (in 2019). In addition, hospitals in Chui State are unable to provide diagnostic and treatment services for NCDs, which should be addressed at each medical facility, due to aging medical equipment, and patients are concentrated in certain well-equipped hospitals. Thus, improving the quality of medical services is an urgent issue.

This project will strengthen the system for early detection, diagnosis and treatment of NCDs by upgrading medical equipment for diagnosis and treatment of NCDs in hospitals in the capital Bishkek and the surrounding area of Chui Oblast. This is expected to improve the quality of healthcare services and strengthen social infrastructure in Kyrgyzstan, thereby contributing to SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) Goal 3 (health and welfare for all).

The details of the project are as follows
