Philips’ 5000X Series of Electric Shavers for Generation Z

Posted on February 7, 2023 by News Admin

Philips Japan will release the Philips Shaver 5000X Series, an electric shaver developed for Generation Z, on February 8. The company’s official store, Amazon, and major electronics retailers have been accepting pre-orders since February 1; Amazon sells the product for 12,980 yen.

According to Mr. Hideyuki Yamada, General Manager of the Personal Health Business Division, the 5000X series is the first electric shaver developed by the company to meet the needs of the 18 to 29 year old generation. He points out that this generation of young people is approaching the point where they are shifting from razors to electric shavers, and that they are also experiencing a shift from adolescent acne to adult acne, sticky skin, dryness, and other skin problems.

According to Eimi Sasaki, Consumer Marketing Group Manager of the Personal Health Business Division, this generation often has thin, unkempt beards, and when surveyed by the company, more than 40% used razors. In addition, the needs for a deep shave were highest among those aged 30 and older, while those aged 18-29 were the most demanding for gentleness to the skin, according to the company.

The 5000X series, introduced in this context, employs the “microbead coating” on the head, which was previously available only on higher-end models, to reduce friction with the skin by 20%. In addition, a hypoallergenic surgical stainless steel blade is used to reduce skin irritation.

Other features include the 360-D flex head, which moves 360 degrees, and a rotating 27-blade blade that delivers 55,000 cuts per minute, allowing for a quick shave while staying close to the skin and minimizing shaving residue.

Furthermore, it is the company’s first product to adopt a freestanding stand design. It is designed to be easily placed in the compact washrooms of single people.

The included charging cable can be connected to a commercially available AC adapter with a USB Type-A port, reducing the amount of luggage required for travel. Mr. Sasaki said, “At 161g, it is lightweight and convenient for travel and business trips. It can also be locked to prevent it from malfunctioning by pressing the power button for 3 seconds,” he said, introducing that it is also designed to be portable.
